Industrialists in Chhattisgarh have threatened to shut down factories within a month if the state government goes ahead with a plan to increase power tariff.
Industrial groups, such as the Chhattisgarh Udyog Mahasangh and the Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce and Industries, have strongly opposed the new power tariff plan to be implemented July 1.
Eight of the state's 13 Ferro alloy units shut down Saturday in protest.
"Chhattisgarh has over 1,200 small and medium scale industries. The 40-60 percent hike in power tariff will be a blow to the industries, except the 15 big groups having their own captive power plants," Mahesh Kakkar, chief of Chhattisgarh Udyog Mahasangh, said here Sunday.
Industrial units pay Rs.3.80 to Rs.4.60 per unit of power, but this would go up to Rs.4.50 to Rs.7.50 per unit July 1.
Chief Minister Raman Singh Sunday said the new power tariff would not be withdrawn.
The Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board (CSEB) last month turned down a petition by the mahasangh that had said the new tariffs would "negate industrial development".
An official of the Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce and Industries said hundreds of thousands of the nearly 1.8 million people employed by the industries would lose jobs if the factories shut down.
