Kerala opposition leader V.S. Achuthanandan's position in his Communist Party of
India-Marxist (CPI-M) further weakened Sunday with the non-inclusion of two of his key aides in the party's state secretariat.
Announcing the newly formed 14- member secretariat, party state secretary Pinnarayi Vijayan said that S. Sarma and M. Chandran had been left out.
Four new members were included in the secretariat and three of them - Vaikom Viswan, V.V.Dakshina Murthy and A.K.Balan - are close to Vijayan.
The fourth member is E. Balanandan, who was removed from the party politburo in May.
The three-day state committee meeting that concluded here Sunday is reported to have seen a bitter struggle between Achuthanandan and Vijayan.
There was more bad news for Achuthanandan as it was decided that the report on the meeting, instead of being discussed by the party cadres, will now be discussed by the CPI-M politburo.
Party sources say that this is because the report contains scathing remarks on the manner in which Achuthanandan has encouraged factionalism in the party.
The faction suffered a severe drubbing at the February party conference when all the 12 candidates it put up for the state committee lost badly.
Achuthanandan finished 64th among the 76 members of the new state committee.
