Retired Indian Army personnel will now guard national parks and sanctuaries in Madhya Pradesh to check tiger poaching.
The state's forest department had forwarded the proposal to the central government which has been accepted, said chief wildlife warden P.B. Gangopadhyay.
"The retired army personnel would be deployed in the forests before the monsoon. They will guard the forests along with the forest department staff," Gangopadhyay told IANS.
For poachers, the monsoon is the best season for their activity because the rains make the forests inaccessible.
The central government has already provided the budget for the purpose, he said.
The state has five national parks and sanctuaries under Project Tiger - Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Panna, Satpura and Pench.
The retired soldiers would be initially deployed in the Project Tiger sanctuaries and national parks.
A forest department official said that the state was facing an acute shortage of staff to guard the forests.
Incidents of poaching, especially of tigers and leopards, have caused concern among forest officials.
There are nine National Parks and 25 Sanctuaries spread over an area of 10,862 sq km constituting 11.40 percent of the total forest area in the state. Project Tiger was launched in 1973 to conserve the tiger population in the country.
