The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) will expand its presence in Afghanistan with the deployment of troops and try to strengthen Afghan security forces for the next elections, reports Prensa Latina.
NATO will deploy forces as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). However, NATO spokesman Karen Tissot Van Patot did not reveal which member countries would supply the troops.
A NATO spokesperson had last week said that the Netherlands, Britain, Spain and Romania may be the candidates.
The NATO-led ISAF plans to expand further into the south of the country, which has traditionally been a Taliban stronghold.
The North Atlantic alliance is commanding 8,310 soldiers from 47 countries and expects to raise this number to 12,000.
Analysts say NATO is using the excuse of securing the coming parliamentary elections in the country to expand its military machinery to the south and extend its operations to the entire Afghan territory.
