A new study suggests that the carbon dioxide that comes from fossil fuels will be absorbed by oceans, in the long term eradicating the problem of global warming.
A California university study says that the process will take 1,000 centuries to be completed, as happened with the last warming earth went through 55 million years ago, reports Prensa Latina.
The study, published in the latest issue of Science magazine, says the scientific hypothesis is based on the analysis of marine sediments deposited during the global warming called Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM).
The sediments reveal an abrupt change in the chemical composition of the sea, which started to develop at the beginning of the PETM - a period followed by a long and slow recovery.
A US university teacher, James Zachos, explained that when investigating the oceanīs sedimentary layers he was able to observe the effects of a quick acidification during the PETM.
According to the teacher, the carbon dioxide dissolved in the water creates that acidification to expand to the oceanīs bottom.
The latest research confirms that nearly half the carbon dioxide produced by man (some 1.2 billion carbon tonnes) went to the oceans in the last two centuries.
