An uneasy calm prevailed in a village in Rajasthan's Tonk district Tuesday, a day after a police firing on farmers agitating for water resulted in the death of five villagers.
Meanwhile, some parts of the district, about 100 km from here, observed a partial shutdown in response to a strike call by the opposition Congress.
Police had fired on farmers in Soyala near Tonk city after the agitation reportedly turned violent. A woman was among those killed and 25 people were injured.
"No untoward incident has been reported since Monday evening in the troubled areas of Tonk district", a police official told IANS on phone.
Over 1,000 police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order in the district. Special task force (STF) personnel were patrolling the sensitive areas, he added.
Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has instituted a judicial inquiry into the incident. The state government has announced compensation of Rs.100,000 for each of those killed, while the injured would receive Rs.10,000.
This is the second time in over eight months that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled state government had to face the wrath of the farmers demanding water for irrigation.
On Oct 27 at Ravala and Ghadsana in Sri Ganganagar district, five farmers were killed when police fired on a mob demanding release of water from the Indira Gandhi canal.
