A blazing sun has kept the mercury at over 45 degrees Celsius for an entire month in Chhattisgarh, beating the hottest summer spell in the area 22 years ago.
The heat wave has already claimed 22 lives in the state in the past month. And the meteorological department added to its woes Wednesday, forecasting that monsoon rains would begin only around July 19-20, a week later than earlier predicted.
Metrological department chief M.L. Sahu added it was in 1983 when the mercury stayed at 45 degree Celsius for 22 days. But this summer has smashed the previous record.
The heat wave has badly affected normal life across the state.
"The unprecedented hot wind coming from Rajasthan is making the state swelter. The trend is likely to continue till monsoon hits the state, probably on July 19-20," Sahu said.
Meteorologists and medical experts have advised people to remain indoors till monsoon arrives as a high quantity of ultraviolet rays may cause eye and skin diseases like skin cancer and heat stroke.
