Indian batsman V.V.S. Laxman is to replace Sachin Tendulkar in the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) XI line-up for a tsunami relief match to be played against an International XI at Lord's June 14.
"I am delighted that V.V.S. Laxman has accepted our invitation to join the MCC side in place of Sachin Tendulkar," John Stephenson, MCC's head of cricket, was Saturday quoted as saying by The News.
Tendulkar, who recently underwent a surgery for a recurring problem with his left elbow, will be out of action for at least 16 weeks and will be replaced by Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming as the captain of the MCC squad.
The Mumbai batting maestro will, however, be present during the match at the Lord's to involve himself in fundraising activities to raise money for the survivors of the Dec 26 tsunami that lashed South Asia and other regions, killing nearly 280,000 people.
"It is disappointing that Sachin is unable to take part in the match, but it is excellent news that he will still be able to join us on June 14 to lend his support to our fundraising for what continues to be a very worthy cause," Stephenson said.
Revised MCC squad: Stephen Fleming (captain), Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, V.V.S. Laxman, Jacques Kallis, Andy Flower, Kumar Sangakkara, Shaun Pollock, Anil Kumble, Muttiah Muralitharan, Shoaib Akhtar.
International XI: Brian Lara (captain), Virender Sehwag, Sanath Jayasuriya, Graeme Smith, Rahul Dravid, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Chris Cairns, Shane Warne, Chaminda Vaas, Mohammad Sami, Makhaya Ntini.
