Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Thursday skipped an official function in his Gandhinagar constituency after radical Hindu groups threatened to stage protests against his praise of Mohammed Ali Jinnah.
Advani, who resigned as BJP president Tuesday following his laudatory references to Pakistan founder as a secular, was to formally announce Gujarat's Gandhinagar district as a Jyotigram district.
The Jyotigram scheme aims at electrifying all villages in the state.
In Advani's absence, Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who returned to the state capital late Wednesday after attending a crucial BJP meet in New Delhi, presided over the function at Rupal village, about 40 km from here.
All members of the state cabinet were present on the occasion.
Advani's remarks during his Pakistan visit last week had evoked sharp reactions from the state unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), an ideological ally of the BJP.
The VHP had launched a protest campaign with banners displayed on roads, writings on public walls and a chain of text messages over mobile phones, criticising Advani's remarks in strong words.
The VHP announced that Advani would be boycotted in the state whenever he visited even after he tendered his resignation.
Even though Advani was not expected to attend the function, the state government had put up advertisements inviting the public to attend and describing him as leader of the opposition.
