Left parties will hold a protest meeting in the Orissa capital against a proposed Rs.400 billion deal for a steel plant between the state government and a South Korean company.
Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary A.B. Bardhan said here Thursday the deal with South Korea's Pohang Steel Company (Posco) would "amount to handing over of our mineral wealth to a foreign company".
The Left will pressure the government to prevent an MoU between the Orissa government and Posco for the deal to set up a 12-million-tonne capacity steel plant.
Posco has reportedly asked the state government for mining rights on 600 million tonnes of iron ore for 30 years and 400 million tonnes as long-term supply.
"Why cannot the state-run Mining Corporation of India market iron ore to different companies instead of the government handing over mining lease," he said.
"The CPI and other Left parties will hold a convention to oppose this deal," he said.
The state government, which plans to sign the MoU later this month, is facing opposition from various quarters on the project.
State Congress leader Lalatendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra has said the state government should convene a special assembly session to discuss the matter.
