Hundreds of people torched a police jeep in Orissa's Keonjhar district Thursday to protest the death of a youth in police firing a day before.
Dilip Mohanta, 20, had been killed and several others injured Wednesday when police fired at a group of about 50 people who had stormed the police station in Champua town to demand action against the guilty in the attempted rape of a minor.
The incident had taken place in Rajia village on June 3, a police official said.
When the girl protested, the man beat her up with stones and left her with serious head injuries and fled. The girl is currently being treated at a Cuttack hospital, he said.
There was considerable tension in the area, a top district administrative official said. Residents of Keonjhar and Champua have also called for a shutdown to protest the police firing.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has ordered a judicial probe into the police firing and announced Rs.100,000 compensation to the family of Mohanta.
