Nepali Congress president and former prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala Thursday met ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chief Sonia Gandhi and discussed the roadmap of political parties to restore democracy in the kingdom.
"The meeting was very constructive. Sonia Gandhi expressed support for the democracy plan of the seven-party alliance," his daughter Sujata Koirala told
IANS.
"Gandhi was very understanding of Nepal's problems and told him about her desire to see a stable and prosperous Nepal. She also wished him good health and a speedy recovery," said Sujata Koirala, also a leader of Nepali Congress.
Girija Koirala will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discuss the situation in Nepal later in the evening.
The 82-year-old grand old man of Nepal politics, who arrived here Saturday primarily for a health check-up, has used the opportunity to discuss the situation in Nepal with top Indian leaders. He has already met Defence Minister Pranab Mukerjee and External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh.
Natwar Singh, in his meeting with Koirala Wednesday, conveyed to him India's "strong support for all efforts to restore multi-party democracy and constitutional monarchy in Nepal".
"The multi-dimensional and complex challenges facing Nepal can only be addressed by forging a broad national consensus on an eventual political settlement," Natwar Singh told Koirala.
India backed the common agenda and roadmap for restoring democracy prepared by seven political parties in Nepal.
"Ways to control the Maoist insurgency also figured in the discussions," an aide to Koirala told IANS.
Koirala had been arrested after the royal takeover by King Gyanendra Feb 1. He was released a few days after the king, under tremendous pressure from New Delhi and the rest of the international community, lifted the state of emergency.
