Suspected guerrillas shot and critically wounded the brother of a municipal official in this summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, police said Thursday.
Police said the guerrillas fired several rounds at Mayasar Rashid near a mosque at Ahmednagar Wednesday on the city's outskirts.
"Rashid received serious bullet wounds in his chest and abdomen. He was immediately taken to Soura medical institute for treatment. His condition is serious," a police officer said.
Rashid is the younger brother of Syed Fatima, a municipal corporator of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP).
Guerrillas have so far killed over a dozen corporators and councillors while over three dozen elected civic representatives have resigned following threats from militant groups.
The corporators say the lone security guard provided to them by the state government is inadequate.
But Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed has said that the sheer number of corporators and councillors made it difficult for his government to provide more personnel to guard them.
