A British oil and gas explorer and its sister concern in India will undertake oil exploration in Bihar by October this year.
Officials said the Bihar government granted the oil exploration licence to Cairn Energy Search Ltd. (CESL) and Cairn Petroleum India Ltd. (CPIL) two days ago.
Though the centre had granted a licence in November last year, the state clearance has come only now.
"CESL and CPIL would start oil exploration work soon after the rainy season, most probably by October," said B.K. Haldar, Bihar mines secretary.
State Chief Secretary G.S. Kang said: "The companies were given licence to explore oil in 13 districts spread over a 15,500 sq km area in the Gangetic basin or Purnea basin for the next seven years."
CESL had shown interest in undertaking work for crude exploration in the state's Gangetic basin two years ago.
According to independent estimates, the find of the Gangetic basin is as high as 465 million tonnes of crude and natural gas. Experts feel the fuel can be tapped after drilling 4,400 m.
Officials say huge reserves of petroleum have been found in an area of 57,000 sq km in the Gangetic plains.
If the basin yields crude and natural gas, the state government will get 10 percent royalty for every tonne.
