Adding their voice to the debate over L.K. Advani's comments on Mohammed Ali Jinnah, a section of 'moderates' in the Gujarat Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Friday that the party chief was wrong.
The Pakistan founder was not secular, maintained a section of the party leadership, who have been ranged against Chief Minister Narendra Modi on a variety of issues.
The leaders who met Friday in the state capital Gandhinagar Friday included former chief ministers Keshubhai Patel and Suresh Mehta, former union minister Kashiram Rana and former home minister Gordhan Zadafiya.
"We met and discussed the current political situation. We are preparing a detailed statement but the gist of it is that it is wrong to portray Jinnah as secular," Rana told reporters.
The veteran leaders are united by their rivalry against Modi and have been sympathetic to the cause of dissident legislators demanding the chief minister's ouster.
Advani resigned as party president Tuesday, a day after he returned from Pakistan where he made laudatory references to Jinnah and referred to partition as an "unalterable reality of history". The subsequent furore in the sangh parivar that he retract his statement led to his resignation.
Advani has found little support in either Gujarat, a stronghold of the party, or in his constituency Gandhinagar with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leading a shrill campaign against him.
Even Modi, often seen as Advani's protégé, has refused to make a public statement on the issue though he has visited Delhi twice for BJP meetings.
