State-run Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) will set up a 1,000 megawatt coal-based power plant at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs. 40 billion ($900 million), a top official of the company said Friday.
NLC will hold an 89 percent stake in the joint venture, S. Jayaraman, chairman and managing director of NLC said, after signing an agreement with Tamil Nadu State Electricity Board.
NLC, which runs on lignite mined in central Tamil Nadu, expects to achieve 7,500-megawatt power generation over the next seven years - three times its present generation, said Jayaraman.
The company is buoyant after it posted a profit of Rs 12.15 billion ($284 million) for the year ended March 2005, registering a 24 percent growth, he added.
NLC's lignite production during 2004-05 totalled 21.57 million tonnes - a growth of five percent, the company said.
The company will also take up the Jayamkondam project in the state, to develop 8.9 million tonnes of mine, and put up a 1,000 megawatt power station, at a total cost of Rs.60 billion ($1.36 billion) in the project's first stage.
