Two people were killed and over a dozen injured Friday in an Uttar Pradesh station when a group of ticket-less passengers went berserk  - firing, hurling stones and setting fire to the stationmaster's room - after they were nabbed.

The incident at Dadri station, 60 km from here, also led to costly equipment being damaged.

"Some ticket-less travellers turned violent and started pelting stones at the trains and set fire to the booking office and stationmaster's room, damaging the communication and signalling equipment," Vagesh Pandey, chief public relations officer of the North Central Railway, told IANS from Allahabad.

According to Pandey, some in the group started firing leading to the death of two amongst them. Several people were injured, including some railway staff and four of the passengers held for travelling without ticket.

The agitators also set fire to the vehicle of the ticket checking squad. 

Northern Railway officials in the capital became aware that something was wrong when several trains from the eastern region were found to be running late for no apparent reason. A total of 15 trains running between the eastern region and the capital are running behind schedule.

Dadri station near Ghaziabad falls on the Howrah-Delhi trunk route.

Train services were resumed through Dadri at 11.13 a.m., according to Pandey.

"With the communications and signalling system at Dadri station non functional, we are bypassing the station till the system is restored. Instead, the trains are being halted at Ajaibpur and Maripath near Dadri," Pandey said.

Several senior officials from northern railway have rushed to the spot and a three-member committee has been appointed to probe the incident.
