An Orissa legislator who had been absconding after attacking a policeman a fortnight ago was granted bail after he surrendered before a local court Monday, police said.
Prafulla Kumar Mallik, a ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA who represents the Kamakhyanagar constituency in Dhenkanal district, surrendered before the subdivision judicial magistrate at Kamakhyanagar.
The court granted him bail on the condition that he should report to police every Monday and should not leave the court's jurisdiction without prior permission, said Bijay Kumar Das, deputy inspector general of police.
Mallik and his supporters had allegedly attacked inspector Ratan Kumar Sahu on the night of May 14 for not taking action against encroachers.
Sahu suffered serious injures, particularly on his head, and is still undergoing treatment in a hospital. Police had arrested 15 of the 49 accused in the attack.
Two brothers of Mallik, who are also alleged to be involved in the incident, are still absconding.
