The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Friday threatened a nationwide agitation against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre if prices of petroleum products were hiked further.
"We will start a big movement against the UPA decision. We have indications that the prime minister is considering a hike in prices," CPI-M politburo member Jyoti Basu told reporters after attending the party's meeting here.
"We have discussed the matter with the Union cabinet members and there are differences within the UPA regarding a price hike," the veteran Communist leader said.
The Left parties, including the CPI-M and the Communist Party of India, back the Congress-led UPA government at the centre.
The CPI-M politburo met here Friday morning while the party's central committee will be meeting in the evening.
Earlier Friday, politburo member and Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) general secretary Chittabrata Mujumdar also threatened a nationwide stir against any rise in prices of petro products.
Asked if the government had given an assurance against increasing prices of LPG and kerosene, the trade union leader said: "We have no such assurance."
The centre is considering an upward revision of petrol and diesel prices in view of the rise in crude oil prices in the international market.
CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat and politburo member Sitaram Yechuri Wednesday discussed with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the issue of petro price hike and suggested an alternative plan.
