Orissa is planning to set up a special force to check the destruction of forests, including the smuggling of timber.
"The forest department has proposed to recruit retired army personnel in this force," said a forest department official.
The state registers over 100,000 forest offence cases every year.
"The rapid degradation of forests has created problems for the state's eco-system. The state is facing natural calamities like droughts, floods and cyclones frequently," he said.
Orissa has a recorded forest area of about 58,135.47 sq km including 26,329.12 sq km of reserve forests.
Central Reserve Police Force personnel have been guarding the Barbara reserve forest area in Khurda district for the last 10 years, he said. Additional security personnel have been deployed in different forest areas.
The forest department has submitted the proposal for formation of a special force to the state government.
The force is initially proposed to be deployed in four sensitive jungle areas including Satkoshia, Similipal and Bhitarkanika on an experimental basis.
"Later it would be extended to 19 other forests areas along the state's border with Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh," he said.
