In a melodious fusion, a Tamil epic composition has been set to Western classical music by noted music director R. Ilayaraja.
"Thiruvasagam in Symphony", based on the verses of Tamil poet Manickavasagar, is all set for release in India June 30. A global release will take place in the US July 2.
The music was scored by Ilayaraja in cooperation with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra. Stephen Schwartz, an American opera writer, contributed the English words in a 20-minute long item, dovetailed with Ilayaraja singing in Tamil and an American singer singing in English.
The songs have been sung by Ilayaraja and his daughter Bhavatharini.
Born in 1943, Ilayaraja, who hailed from a very poor family in Madurai, began singing and writing music for the Tamil film industry in 1976.
In July 1993, he recorded his first major work in Western classical music, Symphony No.1, with the world famous Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London under the baton of John Scott.
The project was initiated by priest Fr. Jasper G. Raj and his team in Chennai and cost about Rs.7 million.
