If it's any consolation to people in hot and sweaty Delhi, the southwest monsoon is expected to reach the national capital on time around June 29.
This year the monsoon was delayed by four days in Kerala, though the Met department had expected it to be seven days late.
"We expect a normal monsoon this year and it will reach the capital on time as it is progressing at normal speed," R.D. Singh, director, India Meteorological Department told IANS.
The southwest monsoon hit the southern state of Kerala Sunday and crossed southwestern parts of the Bay of Bengal by Monday, according to Singh.
The sweltering heat in Delhi saw some respite Sunday as a sudden bout of afternoon showers in some parts of the city brought temperatures down.
"The afternoon showers were not unexpected as the upper air cyclonic circulation over northwestern Rajasthan and its neighbourhood that caused the rain is normal during this time of the year," Singh said.
According to Singh, there is a possibility of more rain and thundershowers in the next 24 hours as the cyclonic circulation continues to persist. This will bring further respite to the capital as the maximum temperature is expected to fall to around 40 degrees Celsius now from the 43 degrees a week ago.
