Police in Andhra Pradesh Friday moved two top Maoist leaders and four sympathizers they had arrested from one town to another without producing them in court.
Police had Thursday announced they had arrested Communist Party of India (CPI)-Maoist leaders Ganti Prasadam alias Prabhakar (56) and Yamasani Surender alias Venkanna (42) and four Viplava Rachayitala Sangham (Virasam) or Revolutionary Writers' Association members at Arsapally on the outskirts of Nizamabad town.
Police was to produce the arrested men in a court Thursday evening. They later said they would be produced in court Friday morning.
As reporters were waiting at the district court, police took the men to Bodhan town, a distance of 50 km from Nizamabad.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Anjani Kumar said the men were arrested when they were moving about in a suspicious manner at Arspally village in Nizamabad after returning from Aurangabad in Maharashtra, where they had held a meeting.
"They deliberated on a conspiracy to act against the state and were returning to proceed on this to Nallamala forest area," Director General of Police Swaranjit Sen said here.
CPI-Maoist leaders Prasadam and Surender held senior positions in the party. Police said both were involved in several Maoist-related violent incidents in Guntur, Prakasam, Kurnool, Cuddapah and Chittoor districts.
The other four arrested men are Virasam members Nelletla Venugopal, a senior journalist, Vannam Chennaiah, a lecturer in Jawahar Bharati Degree College at Kavali, Gottimukkala Pinakapani, editor of Telugu magazine "Arunatara" and Soma Ravikumar.
Venugopal is the brother-in-law of Virasam leader and former CPI-Maoist emissary Varavara Rao.
Varavara Rao, who rushed to Nizamabad, alleged the police had tortured the arrested men. He said there was no ground for the police action as they were holding a meeting to decide the future course of action of Virasam.
"Even CPI-Maoist is not banned. The government still says it will hold talks with the party. Then how can police arrest them?" asked Varavara Rao.
