Rainfall in major potato production state Uttar Pradesh and some parts of northern India may hit the crop's production ahead of harvesting season even as it led to an upward rally in futures prices at both the NCDEX and MCX.
Potato futures contracts hit the upper circuit at both the commodities exchanges today.
"Rainfall in Northern India across Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and even West Bengal is causing huge damage to the standing potato crop and this has scaled up the futures market also," Delhi Potato and Onion Merchants Association President, Trilokchand Sharma, told PTI.
Sharma said that despite a good production, this rainfall would cause great damage to the standing crop presently awaiting harvest.
On the estimated damage, he said it could only be known after the harvest.
"The arrivals have decreased and here at Delhi only 80 trucks (per truck 10 tonnes) came today as against 130 trucks that arrived earlier," he said.
The spot prices of potato also witnessed an increase with prices in Delhi flaring up by Rs 50 per 80 kg bag. Price of 80 kg bags stood at between Rs 350-450 in Delhi today Prices also increased in Kolkata from Rs 440 per 100 kg to Rs 480 while prices in Mumbai increased by almost 20 per cent at Rs 60 to Rs 70 per 10 kg.
