Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today flayed the Centre for putting the conversion of 890 kms of roads into four lanes under the National Highway Development Programme (NHDP) on the back burner.
"I want a reply from the Centre as to why the NHDP phase III programme for conversion of 890 kms of National Highway in Bihar into four lanes has been put on the back burner despite the assurance given by the Prime Minister," Kumar asked after emerging from the 'janata durbar'.
"We are not going to take it lying down. Bihar Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore Yadav would soon meet his central counterpart seeking clearace of the project. If the meet fails, I will personally meet the Prime Minister and remind him about the assurance given by him last year about the conversion," Kumar said.
People of Bihar would launch an agitation against the Centre's "arbitrary decision", he said.
Instead of cooperating with the state government, Union ministers from RJD were creating hurdles in the making of a new Bihar, Kumar alleged.
He charged central agencies like CPWD and IRCON, appointed for construction and strengthening of 2000 kms of state highways, with being busy only holding meetings and doing nothing.
The state would lose about Rs 4000 crore in four years as central assistance if the state highways under Rashtriya Sam Vikas Yojna were not strengthened, Kumar said.
