11 killed, five missing in coal mine blast in southwest China

At least 11 miners were confirmed dead and five others missing when a gas explosion ripped through a coal mine in southwest China's Guizhou Province today, local officials said.
The accident took place early morning in the Yile Coal Mine located at Shuitang Town of Panxian County, a spokesman with the Guizhou Provincial Administration of Coal Mine Safety said.
Twenty-five miners were working underground when the blast occurred, and only nine managed to escape, Xinhua news agency quoted the spokesman as saying.
China's huge coal mine sector is faced with frequent mine accidents. There were 2,945 coal mine accidents in the country last year in which 4,746 people died, which is equivalent to 13 deaths every day.
