The death toll from a coal mine gas explosion in southwest China's Guizhou Province has risen to 16 with the body of the last missing miner found, local officials said today.
Rescuers found the body while clearing debris from the shaft late yesterday. The bodies of all the miners killed in the blast have been recovered, said a spokesman for the Guizhou Provincial Bureau of Work Safety.
The blast happened early Sunday in the Yile Coal Mine located at Shuitang Town. Twenty-five miners were working underground when the explosion occurred, and only nine managed to escape, Xinhua news agency quoted local officials as saying.
The owner of the coal mine has been ordered to report regularly to local police and an investigation into the cause of the explosion is under way.
China's huge coal mine sector is faced with frequent mine accidents. There were 2,945 coal mine accidents in China last year in which 4,746 people died, equivalent to 13 miners dead per day.
