Cabinet approves ordinance to amend tax tribunal act

The cabinet Wednesday decided to promulgate an ordinance to amend the National Tax Tribunal Act, 2005 to further strengthen the body and enable it to speedily dispose of tax disputes.
The ordinance will be replaced by a bill in the budget session of parliament.
The amendments to the act are aimed at further strengthening the tax tribunal, said an official spokesman after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The National Tax Tribunal (NTT) was notified under the act in January 2006 paving the way for faster disposal of tax cases.
With the establishment of NTT, all matters and proceedings pending in appeals and references under the direct and indirect tax laws before the high courts stood transferred to it.
Under the act, NTT is authorised to hear cases on substantial questions of law from decisions of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal.
